Greyfriars Bobby's Bar

Cocktail Bar | Edinburgh | Scotland | United Kingdom

Traditional Scottish pub experience

"Greyfriars Bobby's Bar" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a traditional establishment that is primarily known as a classic pub, but can also be perceived as a cocktail bar due to its wide range of drinks that go beyond simple beers. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it is a popular meeting place for both tourists and locals. The name of the pub is inspired by the famous story of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye Terrier who reportedly guarded the grave of his deceased owner, John Gray, for 14 years in the 19th century until his own death in 1872. This touching tale of loyalty and devotion has given the bar its name and adds a special historical charm, enhanced by its proximity to Greyfriars Kirkyard and the Bobby statue.

Cocktail bar in Edinburgh city

The drink selection at "Greyfriars Bobby's Bar" is diverse and reflects Scottish pub culture, focusing on traditional and high-quality options. Notably, the selection of cask ales—hand-pumped beers that have matured in barrels and often come from local Scottish breweries—is a highlight. These rotate regularly, providing variety and offering beer lovers an authentic experience. Additionally, there is an extensive collection of whiskies that will delight any connoisseur, including single malts from various regions of Scotland. For those who prefer something lighter, the bar also boasts an impressive range of British and craft gins served with high-quality tonic options. While cocktails are not the main focus, classic mixed drinks like a whisky sour or a gin and tonic are available and are prepared with care, giving the bar a cocktail bar character.

Authentic Scottish dishes to try

Culinarily, "Greyfriars Bobby's Bar" remains true to classic pub tradition with a menu that emphasizes hearty Scottish dishes. Particularly popular are the handmade pies, such as the Crofter’s Pie or the British Steak & Nicholson’s Pale Ale Pie, served with a crispy crust or mashed potatoes. Another highlight is the traditional Haggis, Neeps & Tatties, a combination of haggis, turnips, and potatoes, enhanced with a rich sauce that captures the taste of Scotland. Fish and chips is also a favorite, featuring freshly fried fish and thick-cut chips. For vegetarians, options like the Vegetable Scotch Broth or other meatless alternatives are available, yet still maintain the rustic character of the cuisine. The meals are simple but of high quality, perfectly paired with the drink offerings.

Cask Ales and local beers

The atmosphere in the bar is warm and inviting, characterized by traditional Scottish pub design. The decor features dark wood, cozy seating, and a large bar that dominates the space. The bar is located on the ground floor of a row of Georgian houses and is adjacent to the historic Candlemakers’ Hall, built in 1722, adding additional character to the place. Particularly in the summer months, an outdoor area opens up, offering views of the surroundings and the nearby Edinburgh Castle, enriching the experience even further. The vibe is lively yet relaxed, attracting a colorful mix of visitors—from tourists exploring the history of Greyfriars Bobby to regular patrons who appreciate the reliable quality. The staff is known for their friendliness and expertise, ensuring that guests feel welcome, even when it gets busy.

Cozy atmosphere in the bar

"Greyfriars Bobby's Bar" is part of the Nicholson’s Pub chain, known for its historic buildings and focus on British hospitality. This background is reflected in the careful maintenance of the traditional ambiance and the quality of the offerings. The bar is not just a place for drinks and food, but a piece of living history. Its proximity to the Bobby statue, created by William Brodie in 1873 and one of the most photographed attractions in Edinburgh, makes it a popular stop for visitors. During the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, it becomes particularly lively, yet the bar retains its charm and authenticity.

This before Covid used to be a decent pub that sold good food and drink at decent prices. I am sorry to say this is not the case anymore regarding the beer prices. Yesterday a pint of Nicholson,s pale ale was £6.10. Over a pound more than some nearby pubs. I had a look at the price list on the bar and some other beers were £6.25 upwards.

Avoid as a complete rip off with drinks. £6 a pint when 5 minutes away is at least a pound cheaper

Nice pub, quite busy on a Saturday night. This one was on the more expensive side of the local pubs we tried. Service was quick and friendly.

Locale molto carino e caratteristico. Possibilità di mangiare al ristorante o al bar senza prenotazione pagando prima alla cassa. Buoni i tacos e sausage&mash, ci aspettavamo un po' di più dalla bistecca. Personale gentile, servizio veloce

Disappointing. They got half our order wrong, then it took ages for the right order to arrive. So one of us ate, then we waited, then the other's food turned up quite a bit later. And then the food wasn't great. Shame, because it's in such a good location and looks nice from the outside.

3 staff members were standing around, talking amongst themselves, instead of actually doing their job and serving us. 0/5 The pub was basically empty. They looked at us multiple times and saw that we were ready to order. The front of house who seated us just disappeared. So we left after 20 minutes of not being served. They need to work on their service standards.
